MGVP 2024 Matching Gift: Thyroid Disease Treatment and Technical Transfer Project in Laos
Since its launch in 2009, the MGVP Matching Gift program has contributed to solving global social issues by donating a total of approximately 43 million yen to 12 organizations by 2023.
In 2024, we will support the "Thyroid Disease Treatment and Medical Technology Transfer Project" implemented by International Medical Volunteers Japan Heart in Laos.
For more than 25 years, the organization has been providing free medical services both domestically and internationally, primarily in Southeast Asia. Laos, the country supported through this initiative, is a landlocked nation with extensive mountainous areas, where approximately 95% of the population lives in iodine-deficient regions. As a result, thyroid enlargement caused by decreased thyroid hormone production, as well as the growth of nodules and tumors, is considered to be widespread. In addition, a lack of knowledge about the disease and limited access to medical care exacerbate the condition, leading to further enlargement and affecting the quality of life of local residents.
Through this project, support will be provided for medical activities at Oudomxay Provincial Hospital in northern Laos. As part of this initiative, the project aims to enable local medical staff to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the treatment of thyroid diseases and to establish a sustainable system in which surgeries, medical treatment, and patient lifestyle guidance can be carried out independently by local staff. Through these efforts, the project seeks to contribute to the creation of "Foster a well-being society", one of our material issues.
By supporting this program, we aim to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being for All.
