MGVP Matching Gift for 2022: Pirika's Project to Solve the World's Garbage Problem

The Mitsui Global Volunteer Program (MGVP) is Mitsui & Co.'s own program to support organizations that have been working to resolve social problems, launched in 2009, has donated a total of approximately 39 million yen to nine organizations by 2021.

In 2022, MGVP will support a project to solve the world's garbage problem promoted by Pirika Association.

Pirika's mission is to overcome all environmental problems through the power of science and technology, and it aims to reverse the amount of waste discharged into the natural world and the amount of waste collected by the year 2040. The organization is creating businesses and services that contribute to the two areas of measurement (quantifying the amount and types of waste spilled and collected) and countermeasures (reducing waste spilled and increasing waste collected).

Pirika, Inc., which shares the same representative as the organization, has developed a social networking application that promotes trash collection by sending "thank you" stamps, comments, and other forms of praise to ordinary citizens who pick up trash. As of February 6, 2024, Pirika has helped to collect 340 million pieces of trash in more than 120 countries around the world. The use of this app by local governments and corporations is expanding, and as an organization that promotes sustainability and environmental awareness, Pirika is having an enormous social impact.

Through its support to Pirika, Mitsui & Co. will contribute to the solution of global environmental problems by raising awareness of waste issues and contributing to the resolution of waste problems.
