New York, NY – Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc. (“Mitsui USA”) announced that Sayu Ueno has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer as of April 1, 2020. Mr. Ueno will concurrently serve as Executive Managing Officer and Chief Operating Officer of the Americas Business Unit of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Mitsui USA’s parent company in Tokyo.

Mr. Ueno has built his career mainly in the company’s chemicals division, most recently serving in Tokyo as Managing Officer & Chief Operating Officer of the Basic Materials Business Unit. In 2015, as General Manager of the Planning & Administrative Division in the Chemicals Unit, he took the lead in coordinating strategic initiatives among Mitsui’s chemicals units.  Prior to that, he was General Manager of Industrial Chemicals Division, where he worked to create business in the phenol chain and aromatics industry as well as leading projects constructing chemical plants in Germany and the U.S.  Mr. Ueno’s longtime career in Mitsui’s chemical business, including almost 10 years residing in Germany, has made him well known in the global chemical industry. More broadly, from 2016 to 2018, Mr. Ueno was General Manager of the Corporate Planning & Strategy Division, where he implemented strategic initiatives for the Mitsui & Co. as a whole.  A native of Kyoto Prefecture, Mr. Ueno joined Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in 1985 after graduating from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law.

He succeeds Katsurao Yoshimori, who has been appointed as Counselor of Mitsui & Co. Ltd. following a two-year tenure in New York as Mitsui USA President and CEO.
