Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo; President and CEO: Kenichi Hori), through its Singapore-based subsidiary Mitsui & Co. (Asia Pacific) Pte. Ltd. (hereinafter "MAP"), has agreed to partner with ACI Logistics Limited (hereinafter "ACIL"), by providing a convertible loan to ACIL, in accordance with the relevant regulatory approvals. ACIL, a subsidiary of ACI PLC (Head Office: Bangladesh), operates "Shwapno," the nation's largest grocery retail chain with over 800 stores across Bangladesh which serves everyday grocery needs.
The ACI Group is one of Bangladesh's leading conglomerates, engaged in a wide range of businesses including retail, mobility, pharmaceuticals, food and agriculture. In November 2024, Mitsui invested in ACI Motors, the group's mobility business. This transaction marks Mitsui's second collaboration with the ACI Group. Bangladesh is one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, and as the middle-income population expands, demand for richer shopping experiences is increasing. Meanwhile, the market share of modern grocery retailers in the food retail industry remains at around 2%, indicating significant growth potential in the future.
As a strategic partner of ACIL, Mitsui expects to accelerate ACIL's growth and business transformation through various operational collaborations, governance forums and access to Mitsui knowhow (including secondees), thereby contributing to the creation of a more prosperous lifestyle in the country. Furthermore, Mitsui aims to strengthen its partnership with the ACI Group and expand collaboration.
