Establishment of University Scholarship Programs for Brazilians living in Japan and Students from India

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Kenichi Hori) has established and begun to administer grant-type university scholarship programs for Brazilian residents in Japan and students from India. The purpose of the programs is to strengthen links with Brazil and India as leading countries in the Global South, and to develop human resources capable of working successfully in a global arena.

University Scholarship Program for Brazilians Living in Japan

Eligibility Third-year students in Brazilian schools or public and private high schools in Japan who intend to pursue four-year university programs, or first-year university students enrolled in four-year university programs in Japan
Number Maximum of four persons per year
Amount A maximum of ¥1.2 million per student per year for tuition fees for four-year university programs, and travel expenses to attend events designated by Mitsui. (subject to maximum limits)
Grant period Until the completion of the university program (maximum of four years)
Application period September 1, 2024 - January 31, 2025

University Scholarship Program for Students from India

Eligibility Enrollees in Indian senior secondary schools, or graduates age under 20
Number Two persons per year
Amount A maximum of ¥6 million per student per year for tuition fees for four-year university programs and language school training, etc.
Grant period Period required for language training at a Japanese language school and a four-year university program (maximum of five years)
Application period July 15-30, 2024

The programs will also help recipients to become bridges between Japan and world, and to take up the challenge of addressing various social issues.

* Main development programs for foreign nationals
• Scholarship programs for elementary and junior and senior high school students at Brazilian schools in Japan (a total of 5,455 students since 2009)
• Mitsui-Bussan Scholarship Program for Indonesia (a total of 52 students since 1992)
• Support for students from Asian countries through the Mitsui Bussan Trade Promotion Foundation (a total of 434 students since 1989)
• Support to enable leading competitors in the Canadian National Japanese Speech Contest to visit Japan (introduced in March 2024)
