Research related to the promotion of new farming management balancing both food production and renweable energy business

Research grant

Project Description

Biomass, sunlight and water are all in plentiful supply in rural areas. Since the launch of the Japan's feed-in tariff scheme for renewable energy, there is increasing hope that renewable energy business utilizing these natural resources can contribute to the revitalization of rural villages. However, currently the majority of rural renewable energy projects are managed by non-local companies, with only a small number of local farmers engaged in energy production integrated with their main farming businesses. Why is that so?
A study on farmers will find out the reasons that impact their desire to implement such a scheme. Based on analysis of this research we will develop methods for creating policy to promote renewable business operations integrated with farm operation. [No. R16-0013]
