Identifying and protecting wintering grounds and migration routes of endangered little terns

Research grant

Project Description

Identifying and protecting wintering grounds and migration routes of endangered little terns
Little terns are an endangered migratory bird species that is the subject of global conservation efforts. Data-logging devices called Geolocators that record a range of information have been used to track the migratory routes of flocks that breed on Japan's Honshu island. However, this research revealed that the wintering grounds were not located in southeastern Australia as previously thought. Therefore, this project will look to more thoroughly identify the locations of these wintering grounds, as well as the wintering grounds and migration routes of flocks from southern Kyushu, which are expected to be different, and use this information to inform international conservation efforts.
