The annual MEF Study Tour of Japan, which ran from 19th November to 9th December, has concluded.
This year, 500 applicants were received, with one participant selected from each of the eight universities: Griffith University, University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, University of Technology Sydney, University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, and Western Sydney University.
Over the 21-day tour, participants explored Japan’s rich culture, visiting Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, and Hiroshima.
They also spent a weekend in Chigasaki with a host family.
The group visited various business sites, including Mitsui HQ, Moon, Mitsui Retail Group, Lendlease, Nihon Sakari and the Australian Embassy.
At Mitsui Retail Group, they learned about 7-Eleven’s operations, while at Mitsui HQ, they explored the coal and iron ore business, as well as the wellness division, including IHH and AIM Service. At the Australian Embassy, they gained valuable insights into the Australia-Japan bilateral relationship from Peter Roberts OAM.
The group also met with Mr. Sato, the Chief Strategy Officer, and Ms. Onda from Mitsui’s Corporate Sustainability Division, where they reflected on their experiences. Participants were particularly impressed by Japan’s beautiful autumn landscapes, the fast and efficient Shinkansen, and the quality of food, from convenient store snacks to Hiroshima’s famous okonomiyaki and fresh oysters.
