School finds winning formula in STEM

Dec. 23, 2020

Wickham Primary School in WA’s North West demonstrated its STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) strength at the recent RoboCup Junior State Event at Curtin Stadium in Perth.

The school’s team placed third in the Novice On-Stage Performance/ Dance category of the robotics competition, having come first last year.

The Pilbara school was one of the first to take part in the Mitsui Iron Ore Development (MIOD) sponsored, Scitech Intensive Robotics Program, over five years ago.

“Wickham was one of original focus schools of the program and it’s great to see its lasting results. I am really proud of both the teachers’ ongoing encouragement and the students’ determination to solve authentic real-world problems,” MIOD General Manger, Tony Doiuchi said.

"The best future jobs will require STEM skills, so it's vitally important to instil in our schools a positive STEM culture that can help students prosper in life.”
