Immersion in Mitsui through New Colombo Plan – April/May 2017

Jun. 27, 2017

During April and May, Mitsui & Co. hosted two Australian university students on a six-week immersion program at Tokyo headquarters. This is part of our ongoing commitment to the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan (NCP).

The students from Monash University and University of Western Australia learnt about Mitsui’s business, history, philosophy and relationship with Australia. They also made visits around Japan: to the iconic Toyota factory, Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metals steel mill, the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

Reflecting on his experience, Monash University arts and law student Alex McLeish says, “The focus is on challenging and developing the knowledge and skills of the participants through seminars and presentations. The immersion program’s entire six weeks is about Mitsui people sharing their knowledge and expertise.”

At the end of their stay, students showcased their many learnings from the program in presentations to senior Mitsui executives.

The NCP aims to make Australia’s young people ‘Asia-literate’ – by lifting their knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region. Since 2015, we have hosted 52 students on NCP.

Mitsui & Co. (Australia) was the first non-Australian company to support the NCP. We leveraged our experience – since 1971 – of sending over 350 students on our own Mitsui Educational Foundation study tour to Japan.
