Mitsui has participated in the world's first and largest e-methanol production and sales business through its equity participation in Kasso MidCo ApS, a subsidiary of European Energy A/S, a Danish renewable energy company.
This project will produce low-carbon e-methanol by synthesizing green hydrogen produced using electricity derived from renewable energy sources and green CO2 derived from biomass. e-Methanol is expected to be in growing demand as a next-generation fuel and raw material for chemicals, and will make a significant contribution to promoting energy transitions and realizing a carbon neutral society. e-methanol is expected to be in growing demand as a next-generation fuel and raw material for chemicals, and will greatly contribute to the promotion of energy transition and the realization of a carbon neutral society.
Business Features
World's first and largest scale: Equipped with a solar power generation facility with an output of 304 megawatts and a water electrolysis unit, e-methanol is produced on a commercial scale with an annual production capacity of up to 42,000 tons.
Green Process: Utilizes electricity derived from renewable energy sources and CO₂ from biomass to achieve a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional fossil fuel-derived methanol.
Solid customers: Sales contracts have been signed with global companies such as A.P. Moller-Maersk, a Danish shipping giant, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk.
We have already concluded sales contracts with global companies such as A.P. Moller-Maersk, a Danish shipping giant, the Lego Group, and Novo Nordisk.
Mitsui will promote the development of next-generation fuel value chains, including e-methanol. We aim to make e-methanol a practical solution in areas where green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia are difficult to use. Together with our U.S. bio-methanol business, we will strengthen our low-carbon methanol supply system and contribute to the development of a sustainable society and lead the way in energy transition.
Kassø e-methanol facility
The challenge is that direct electrification isn't feasible in these industries-but now, there are scalable alternatives.
Kassø, the world's first large-scale e-methanol production site, turns renewable energy, water, and CO₂ into a green fuel and chemical.
