Green Hydrogen Production /Western Australia Yuri Project

The Yuri Project is a joint venture between Mitsui and French electricity giant ENGIE S.A. that will install solar panels (18 MW) and a hydrogen production system (10 MW) in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and supply the green hydrogen produced to an existing ammonia production facility owned by Yara International ASA, a major nitrogen-based fertilizer manufacturer. The project is to supply the produced green hydrogen as a feedstock for clean ammonia to an existing ammonia production facility owned by Yara Pilbara Fertiliser Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yara International ASA, a major nitrogen-based fertilizer manufacturer.

Australia is attracting attention as a future green hydrogen producing country due to its abundant renewable energy resources,
It has also formulated a national hydrogen strategy for 2019.

The Yuri project is the first green hydrogen production project in Australia using a 10 MW class electrolyser,
The project is supported by grants from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Western Australian government.

Through this project, Mitsui aims to contribute to the expansion of the hydrogen industry in Australia and to gain knowledge of green hydrogen production and supply, which is expected to be one of the decarbonization solutions.
In the future, Mitsui aims to build a hydrogen value chain not only within Australia, but also to expand horizontally to other countries and regions, and to export to Japan and other Asian countries.
