Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Kenichi Hori) has started introducing in Japan the EV (electric vehicle) charging and energy management system "ChargePilot", which has been developed by The Mobility House ("TMH"), a German company in which Mitsui has invested.
TMH is engaged in the energy business with a focus on EV batteries, and Mitsui invested in TMH in 2017. ChargePilot is a smart charging system that optimizes EV charging, supports the efficient use of electricity for companies pursuing the introduction of EVs, and also helps to reduce EV introduction costs. In April 2024, operational tests of ChargePilot began at the Tokyo Headquarters of WILLER EXPRESS (Koto-ku, Tokyo)*1 using EV chargers supplied by ABB Ltd. ("ABB")*2, the world's leading manufacturing technology company. The test site is also being used as a showcase to introduce ChargePilot to customers who are promoting the electrification of commercial vehicles.
The introduction of EVs is gaining momentum in Japan (following Europe and the US) as one of the essential initiatives for decarbonization. At the same time, the rapid increase in the use of solar and wind power, which are variable power sources, has led to an expansion of the burden on the power grid. There are also concerns that the increasing electricity demand that comes with the popularization of EVs would further increase the said burden. As one potential solution to these problems, the adoption of smart charging technology has been attracting attention. The technology optimizes EV charging, thereby reducing the load on the power grid and lowering electricity costs for EV owners. Mitsui will widely introduce TMH's smart charging control technology to customers in Japan and work to solve these power grid issues.
In its Medium-term Management Plan 2026, Mitsui has identified the "Global Energy Transition" as one of its key strategic initiatives and aims to support the transition to a decarbonized society through its business activities. Through this initiative, Mitsui will contribute to the creation of a society that is in harmony with the environment.
*1 Mitsui has invested in WILLER (Head Office: Osaka City, Osaka), the parent company of WILLER EXPRESS.
*2 ABB's Terra AC Wallbox (6 kW AC charger): With over one million units having been sold worldwide, including more than one thousand in Japan, this product fully complies with the OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), the international standard protocol, and enables easy maintenance and operation of the charger without the need for a dedicated terminal or special network.
