Correlation analysis of actors and effective governance—towards establishing a short- to medium-term institutional framework for the international resolution of issues pertaining to climate change

Research grant

Project Description

The First Commitment Period under the Kyoto Protocol is to end in 2012. Thus, a critical theme for a resolution of issues pertaining to climate change is the construction of an international institutional or other such framework for the years to follow. Important for this is a deeper understanding of the effectiveness/directionality of governance for such issues. In this research, we develop methods of assessing (a) the effectiveness of climate change related governance to date, particularly with regards to the sufficiency of the major actors and the network that joins them, and (b) the performance of such governance. We also (a) propose a directionality for an international framework to handle climate-related issues and (b) discuss options for same. In our research, we have relied on collaboration with colleagues at a number of institutions: University of Massachusetts (USA); Fridtjof Nansen Institute (Norway); Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Netherlands); and Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC)
