Humanities and social science research related to fisheries systems for realizing the sustainable development of the fishery industries: Case of resource management for red shrimp in Sado

Research grant

Project Description

We studied an individual quota (IQ) method as a means for managing fisheries resources in Niigata Prefecture, and started a model project in September 2011 with red shrimp in the Akadomari District of Sado City. Using humanities and social science-based analysis methods that have not been similarly used for such cases in Japan in the past, we will derive policy implications related to new fisheries system design and operations that will realize (1) the preservation of fisheries resources, (2) the profitability of the fisheries industry, and (3) the advancement of fishing villages. Specifically, we will conduct (1) legal research on roles and policies of the government related to fisheries resources management, (2) folklore research on the transmission of fishing methods and fishing implements, (3) economic research on the state and desires of fishing associations and fishing businesses, (5) research on branding, processing, and sales strategy for red shrimp, and (6) research on environmental education using marine and fisheries resources as materials covering the Akadomari District of Sado City where the model project is currently underway.
