Creating an index for evaluating the recovery of mud crabs populations and the mangrove plantation ecosystems they inhabit

Research grant

Project Description

Creating an index to evaluate the recovery and regeneration of mangrove plantation ecosystems inhabited by crabs.
Mangrove ecosystems in various countries in Southeast Asia are beginning to recover due to tree-planting activities, but there is currently no quantative method for evaluating this recovery. Furthermore, the current situation is that many of these areas are closed off after planting to prohibit use of resources by local peoples. This research project focuses on large coastal-dwelling mud crabs, using them as an index for evaluating not only ecosystem recovery but also mangrove regeneration as a result of subsistence activity by local peoples. It also aims to promote the coexistence of local communites with mangroves through resource utilization and management proposals tailored to the region. [Project No. R15-0065]
