Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Kenichi Hori) will establish Polska-Mit Steel sp. z o.o. ("PMS") in Skarbimierz, Poland.
Electrical steel sheets are used to manufacture motor cores for hybrids, battery EVs, other types of EV, as well as transformer cores for power plants and transformer substations. The need for a response to climate change is now a global issue, and along with the construction of renewable energy generation and grid facilities, the demand for transformers and EVs is expected to grow. To ensure a stable supply of electrical steel sheets to meet this increasing global demand, the expansion of the relevant supply chains has become an urgent priority.
Mitsui first established, in 1993, an electrical steel sheet processing company in the Netherlands. Since then, it has continued to support supply chains for electrical steel sheets used in transformers and EVs by establishing processing companies in China, the Czech Republic, and Canada to provide processing, stockpiling, and inspection services.
In 2023, in order to respond to growing global demand for electrical steel sheets, Mitsui has made additional investments in processing companies in the Netherlands and Canada, to expand its processing capacity to meet market needs.
In addition, Mitsui plans to expand its processing services in Europe through the establishment of PMS in Poland to operate a new processing facility that will help to meet expanding demand for EVs in Europe. PMS will commence operations in April 2026.
Mitsui's material priorities include securing sustainable supplies of essential materials, enhancing the quality of life, and creating an eco-friendly society. Through this initiative, Mitsui will contribute towards the realization of a decarbonized world through ensuring a stable supply of electrical steel sheets for use in EVs and transformers.
