THE NORTH FACE, a brand developed by GOLDWIN INC. (Head office: Shibuya-ward, Tokyo; President: Takao Watanabe), in which we hold a 9.39% stake, planted approximately 200 konara ( Quercus serrata ) trees with 15 customers on October 14, 2023, in the Kameyama Forest in Chiba Prefecture, one of Mitsui's forests.
In 2021 and 2022, THE NORTH FACE planted approximately 4,000 trees in the Numata Forest in Hokkaido, one of Mitsui's forests, as part of the "One Product One Tree Campaign". In addition to the tree planting, we were asked to hold a customer-participation event in order to convey the importance of global environmental conservation directly to our customers through actual activities.
In the process of verifying the venue with GOLDWIN, we proposed the Kameyama Forest, which suffered extensive cedar and cypress tree damage from a typhoon in 2019 and needed to plant new trees to restore the damaged area. This project has now come to fruition with the cooperation of Mitsui Bussan Forest Co.
For the species of trees to be planted this time, broadleaf konara trees were selected instead of the damaged coniferous cedar and cypress trees. The konara has stable roots even on slopes with thin topsoil, and its deciduous leaves nourish the soil, so it is expected to be more resistant to weather disasters than cedar or cypress in the future.
Preventing damage from typhoons and torrential rains is one of the important functions of forests. In the vast Mitsui's forests owned by Mitsui, we are contributing to the realization of a sustainable society by creating a good balance of forests that demonstrate these public interest functions, in addition to the circulating forests that produce timber and the biodiversity protection forests that contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of natural capital, biodiversity, and local culture.
