It’s been 10 years since the last time then-Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi visited Brazil in September, 2004. On 2 August, he participated in the Japan-Brazil Business Forum hosted by JETRO, Nikkei and Valor, with business executives from the two countries, and called for a further expansion of bilateral cooperation, using “Juntos” (together in Portuguese) as a keyword and citing the development of Cerrado as a concrete example.

At this occasion, two countries signed 9 agreements in total, including an agreement among Petrobras, Mizuho Bank, and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) to provide guaranteed finance for construction of 8 FPSOs (US$800 million), an agreement among Mitsui Sumitomo Bank, NEXI, and Amaggi to provide guaranteed finance for agriculture projects (US$200 million), agreements by Vale with Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and JBIC, etc. In addition, JBIC and BNDES agreed on cooperation to encourage investment by Japanese small and medium sized companies in Brazil.
