President Iijima accompanies Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe to his first official visit to Brazil

On 31 July, Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, arrived in Brazil - the last country in his official tour to Latin America. It’s been 10 years since the last time then-Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi visited Brazil in September, 2004. On 1 August, Prime Minister met with President Dilma in Brasilia and agreed on strengthening cooperation in the area of shipbuilding, infrastructure, oil and gas development industries, in the field of innovation and education, and in response to global issues. Furthermore, both heads had a meeting with the members of Wisemen Group who presented a proposal to enhance the bilateral relationship. On 2 August, he participated in the Japan-Brazil Business Forum hosted by JETRO, Nikkei and Valor, with business executives from the two countries, and called for a further expansion of bilateral cooperation, using “Juntos” (together in Portuguese) as a keyword and citing the development of Cerrado as a concrete example.
At this occasion, two countries signed 9 agreements in total, including an agreement among Petrobras, Mizuho Bank, and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) to provide guaranteed finance for construction of 8 FPSOs (US$800 million), an agreement among Mitsui Sumitomo Bank, NEXI, and Amaggi to provide guaranteed finance for agriculture projects (US$200 million), agreements by Vale with Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and JBIC, etc. In addition, JBIC and BNDES agreed on cooperation to encourage investment by Japanese small and medium sized companies in Brazil. The both governments also signed agreements to cooperate in the medical and health sector, research and development in ocean technology, disaster management, and the issues related to environment and sustainable development.
President of Mitsui Global, Mr. Iijima, also accompanied Prime Minister in this tour to Latin America (except Torinidado Tobago), and in Brazil attended the meeting with both heads as a member of Wisemen Group, joined the official lunch hosted by President, and made a presentation on Mitsui’s business in Brazil in one of the sessions at the Forum.
