With over 270 million people, Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest nation by population size. It is also a youthful country with an average age of 29, and its population is still growing. Currently, Indonesia’s productive age population, made up of people aged between 15 and 64, outnumbers the elderly and children. This “demographic dividend” phase is expected to continue until the 2030s or 2040s.
Indonesia is a vast country with an area, including its seas, comparable to other renowned large countries in the world. It is also richly endowed with resources. Compared with countries that have large populations and small areas or small populations and large areas, I believe that Indonesia has great potential for development thanks to this combination of population, resources, and extensive area.
In 1901, the former Mitsui & Co.* became the first Japanese trading company to establish a presence in Indonesia with the opening of an office in Surabaya. Since then, we have contributed to Indonesia’s economic development by adapting our business models in response to growth trends and demand shifts in the country. In addition to our trading activities, we have also invested in basic infrastructure and the energy sector. Other areas of investment have included logistics, transportation, and consumer industries.
Mitsui Indonesia is committed to the development of talented people through work as part of our efforts to create substantial new business with the potential for long-term success. We have also supported the Mitsui-Bussan Scholarship Program for Indonesia since its establishment in 1992, aiming to develop individuals capable of acting as bridges between Japan and Indonesia. Through our business and CSR activities, we are working to create happier lives for the Indonesian people and brighter futures, everywhere.
