On April 2, 2018, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. signed a service agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in relation to counter-measure projects being carried out to prevent red tides in the Republic of Chile.
JICA is carrying out a science and technology research partnership* in Chile to create an early warning system for red tides. Mitsui has entered into this service agreement to set the foundations of this system within society, and support initiatives for further expansion. It is hoped that the project will be carried out more effectively through collaboration between industry, academia, and government from both Japan and Chile, with the goal of fast-tracking the practical application of the project's results. This is the first example of a private company forming a service agreement with JICA.
Mitsui will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through initiatives that address social issues relevant to its own business activities.
