Mitsui & Co. Chairman Masami Iijima has been awarded the Russian Federation’s Order of Friendship at the behest of the Russian president. The Order is awarded by the Russian president to foreign nationals who have contributed to the deepening of peace, friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between Russia and their own country by promoting Russian culture, advancing science and education, realizing major economic projects together with Russia, and other achievements.
An award ceremony was held at the Embassy of the Russian Federation to Japan on June 14, 2017. It was attended by notable people from Japan and Russia, including award recipients and decorated individuals from various fields, management members of partner companies and organizations, and representatives from the Japanese government, and there was a warm atmosphere as Chairman Iijima was presented the Order by Evgeny Afanasiev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Japan.
Mitsui has been fully engaged in business in Russia since it opened a Moscow Representative Office in 1967, and 2017 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the office’s opening. Mitsui is working with the Russian government and partner companies in the country to further develop economic ties between Japan and Russia through projects such as Sakhalin II, which is one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas projects.
In addition to developing the country’s wealth of natural resources, Mitsui is also actively engaging in various other business areas in Russia, including renewable energy, infrastructure, medicine & healthcare, and food & agriculture. We expect economic relations between Japan and Russia to develop further and will continue to contribute to strengthening ties between our countries through our business.
