Laffan Refinery Company Limited 2 has completed the construction of Laffan Refinery 2 (LR2), which began in April 2014. The refinery is located at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar and commenced production activities. Mitsui & Co. holds a 1.0% interest of Laffan Refinery Company Limited 2 through MIT Refinery Ltd., a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. Europe PLC.
LR2 is adjacent to Laffan Refinery 1 (LR1) which began operations in 2009, and each refinery has a refining capacity of 146,000 barrels of condensate per day.
As part of Qatar’s national strategy, LR1 and LR2 will refine condensate produced from the North Field in Qatar, a single natural gas field boasting the world’s largest reserves, and will produce high value-added petroleum products for both domestic and overseas markets. Going forward, the refineries will share some facilities to increase the effectiveness of operations.
LR2 also has a new gas oil deep desulfurization unit and the low-sulfur diesel produced is sold locally in Qatar, the use of which is contributing to reducing the environmental burden of diesel in the country.
