On December 8, 2015, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Chairman Masami Iijima was presented with the 2015 Dwight D. Eisenhower Global Leadership Award by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU), a US not-for-profit, nonpartisan, membership organization based in New York.
Since 2003, the BCIU has been presenting this award to individuals who have brought about innovative progress on a global scale and are recognized as trailblazers in their industry. Chairman Iijima received the award due to his international business leadership and his esteemed contributions to the international community made through many years of business activities with Mitsui & Co. More than 400 people attended the impressive award presentation held in New York, including BCIU's guest of honor, US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, and representatives from Mitsui & Co. partner companies including Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Gestamp, General Electric (GE), DuPont, and Louis Dreyfus Commodities.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman Iijima touched on business activities that leverage Mitsui & Co.'s ability to make connections, giving the US shale oil and gas business as an example, and stated how he wanted Mitsui & Co., together with partner companies, to continue to meet the needs of all stakeholders across the globe. Past winners of this award include GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt and ArcelorMittal CEO Lakshmi Mittal. Chairman Iijima is the first Japanese person to receive the award.
