The two companies built and are managing this 240 MW diesel engine power plant, Jordan's 4th independent power producer (IPP), which began commercial operations on July 10 and is located in Al-Manakher, 25 km east of Jordan's capital city, Amman.
The opening ceremony was attended by His Majesty Abudullah II, King of Jordan, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Hamed and other Jordanian government officials, as well as by Julian Nebreda, President of AES EMEA. Mitsui and AES were jointly awarded their first IPP project in Jordan in February 2006, which began commercial operations in July 2008. Together with this new thermal power plant that began commercial operations in 2014, these two projects are providing core infrastructure to support electricity demand in Jordan's growing economy.
Mitsui has a substantial track record and broad expertise in power and water projects globally, including the Middle East. Mitsui will continue to seek participation in further projects, including large scale IPP/IWPP projects in the Middle East region.
