Mitsui & Co, Ltd. has established the Mitsui Bussan Curriculum for Japanese Studies at the Institute of International Law and International Relations at the University of São Paulo Law School (Instituto de Direito Internacional e Relações Internacionais da Universidade de São Paulo - hereinafter USP/IDIRI), one of the most renowned institutions of higher learning in Brazil. Aimed mainly at students attending the University of São Paulo, the Mitsui Bussan Curriculum for Japanese Studies intends to train qualified Brazilian professionals to contribute to the future exchange between Brazil and Japan, strengthening the ties of friendship which exist between the people of both countries. The idea is to hold classes two or three times a year.
The content of the curriculum will be determined jointly by the USP/IDIRI and Mitsui & Co., Ltd to address topics which reflect current tendencies, and focus upon varied fields of learning. The professors will be specialists with an in-depth understanding of their respective fields. Seminars will be held to promote a greater mutual understanding between Brazil and Japan in a joint effort by Mitsui & Co., Ltd and the renowned research institute of the University of São Paulo Law School. The content of the class discussions will be related to the themes of the lectures given and seminars held.
Inaugural classes of the Mitsui Bussan Curriculum for Japanese Studies are being prepared and are scheduled to be held in September or October of this year. In addition, the future installation of the provisionally named Mitsui Bussan Library, which will offer many types of books related to Japanese culture and society and academic scholarships for short term study programs to the class participants, is under study.
Mitsui & Co. will donate annually, from this date onward, through the Mitsui & Co. do Brazil Foundation*, nearly US$50,000.00 to cover the administrative expenses of the classes. An Administrative Commission will be created, made up of members chosen by the Fund itself and by São Paulo University, to manage the Mitsui Bussan Curriculum for Japanese Studies.
(*) In February of this year, the Mitsui & Co. do Brazil Foundation was founded by Mitsui Brasileira Importação e Exportação S.A. and other Mitsui Bussan's group companies in Brazil. The Foundation will support, among others, activities aimed at solving pertinent social problems and education/training of Brazilian professionals in order for them to contribute to the strengthening of the friendship between Brazil and Japan, the increase of exchanges, and to the further development of partnerships between the two countries.

(2) As well as being a country where Mitsui & Co., Ltd. has long-term investments in many areas, Brazil has the world's largest population of Japanese descendents, whose efforts have led the country to have strong ties with Japan.
(3) The current year is the Year of the Japan-Brazil Exchange commemorating the Centennial of Japanese Immigration to Brazil, and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. is extremely honored to be able to establish such a significant class curriculum, which will lead to the training of qualified Brazilian professionals to contribute to the cultural exchange between Brazil and Japan and strengthen the ties of friendship between the peoples of both countries.
