The 16th Joint Meeting of the Japan Brazil Economic Cooperation Committee was held in Belo Horizonte

On 23 and 24 September 2013, the 16thJoint meeting of the Japan-Brazil Cooperation Committee took place in Belo Horizonte, the state capital of Minas Gerais. The meeting was organized by Confederation of National Industry (CNI) and Keidanren. About 300 people from Japan as well as Brazil participated in the one and half day long meeting which discussed on the important bilateral issues including: (1) trade and investment, (2) infrastructure, logistics and mobility, (3) innovation and human resources, (4) bilateral cooperation in third markets, and (5) energy and development of the supply chain.

President of Mitsui&CO.,LTD, Mr. Iijima, made opening as well as closing remarks as Chairman of the Brazil-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee representing Keidanren; Counsellor to Mitsui&CO.,LTD, Mr. Omae, moderated the infrastructure session as President of Sub-Committee on Economic Cooperation Brazil-Japan; and Executive Managing Officer, Mr. Kanamori, made a presentation on Mitsui’s projects in the energy field. At the meeting, participants reconfirmed a large economic potential of Brazil and many opportunities in economic cooperation between the two countries. In particular, given the importance of improving logistic infrastructure, participants agreed to explore concrete projects in this field. Furthermore, representatives from the industries expressed their high expectation in concluding the Brazil-Japan EPA.

Governor of the State of Minas Gerais, Mr. Antônio Augusto Junho Anastasia, also made a welcome speech at the beginning of the event. Other speakers included President of CNI, Mr. Robson Braga de Andrade; President of FIEMG, Mr. Olavo Machado Junior; Chairman of the Brazil-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee representing CNI, Mr. José de Freitas Mascarenhas; Ambassador of Japan in Brasilia, Mr. Akira Miwa; and Ambassador of Brazil in Tokyo, Mr. André Corrêa do Lago.
