Donating 70,000 CERs to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics

Aug. 19, 2016

On July 28, 2016, Mitsui & Co. donated 70,000 CER*¹ through Jirau Hydropower Plant in northern Brazil which Mitsui owns 20% stake, to offset the greenhouse gas emissions of the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. This was in response to a request from the Rio de Janeiro state government for CER donations to offset the environmental impact of hosting the Games.

The Jirau Hydropower Plant with a total generation capacity of 3,750MW (the fourth largest in Brazil) adopts ‘run-of-river’ type hydropower, making use of the natural river flow for power generation. Providing power to approximately 10 million residents in major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, it reduces six million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year and was registered in December 2012 as one of world’s largest CDM*² project.

Mitsui will continue works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through offsetting activities and contributing for the creation of low-carbon society through developing the renewable energy which has less impact on the environment in countries and regions throughout the world.

*¹ CER: Certified Emission Reductions (one ton of CO2 equivalent)
*² CDM: The UN Clean Development Mechanism
