United Nations Global Compact: Recognition as Leaders based on Notable COP

A group of 32 investors, from 13 countries, that have adopted the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) has recognized Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masami Iijima) as a leader among companies that have submitted a COP (Communication on Progress) to the United Nations Global Compact office, which requests such activities report from organizations that support the Global Compact. Mitsui & Co. received this honor in recognition of the high quality of its report.

In October 2004, Mitsui & Co. announced its support for the Global Compact, in which the United Nations provides to companies and organizations principles with regard to human rights, labor standards, environment, and anti-corruption. Subsequently, Mitsui & Co. has been striving to comply with and implement the guidelines. Since 2004, Mitsui & Co. has submitted its CSR Report to the United Nations Global Compact office annually, and as a result, Mitsui & Co's CSR Report in 2007 was selected as a Notable COP.

The investor group is conducting an independent evaluation of publicly listed companies that are producing reports of particularly high quality out of all the Notable COPs. In 2010, which marks the third year, 44 companies from 20 countries, including Mitsui & Co., were selected as "Leaders".

Mitsui & Co.'s corporate mission is to strive to contribute to the creation of a future where the aspirations of the people can be fulfilled. By continuing to meet and implement the 10 principles of the Global Compact, Mitsui & Co. shall endeavor to provide information that is satisfactory to stakeholders at large through the output of information including Mitsui's CSR Report.

Established jointly in 2006 by the United Nations Environmental Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI) and the UN Global Compact, currently 719 investors from 43 countries have signed the PRI.

(*2) Notable COP
As of end February 2010, 7,542 organizations from over 130 countries have joined the Global Compact, and so far, 342 reports, including Mitsui's CSR Report, have been selected as Notable COPs. Twenty-five companies from various countries were selected as leaders in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
