Mitsui Promotes Domestic CO2 Reduction Project under Japanese CDM Scheme

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui") is pleased to announce that it carries out a CO2 emission reduction project utilizing forest biomass, together with Nishimura Sawmill Co., Ltd. ("Nishimura"). This is Mitsui's first domestic CDM project, whose scheme governed by Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry, Japan.

A woody biomass fired boiler is installed at wood drying facility of Nishimura's saw mill. This replaces the heating oil previously used as thermal source, resulting in the emission reductions of carbon dioxide. Nishimura, the project partner, is engaged in sawing domestically produced logs, mainly Mie origin, and some of Japanese cypress from Sando forest, one of our corporate forests, will be supplied to the mill where the project is implemented.

Mitsui has participated in developing greenhouse effect gases emission reduction projects overseas since 2000, contributing to the mitigation of climate change as well as the achievement of the Japanese GHG emission reductions target set by the Kyoto Protocol. With experience and knowledge in CO2 emission reduction projects, Mitsui will take part in domestic CO2 emission reduction and removal projects and carbon offset, and pursue solutions to the avoidance of climate changes.

The crediting CO2 emission reductions scheme organized by Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry in Japan, where CO2 emission reductions projects, with technology and finance provided by large-scale enterprises, implemented by small and middle scale enterprises CO2 emission reductions are certified and credits generated can be used for accomplishing CO2 emission reductions targets under Keidanren Voluntary Action Plan.
