Iron & Steel Raw Materials and Non-Ferrous Metals
Mitsui USA's Iron & Raw Materials and Non-Ferrous Metals Division specializes in raw materials for iron and steel making, coal, primary aluminum, secondary aluminum, aluminum alloy, copper cathode, and non-ferrous materials/products.
This Division is a producer, supplier, coordinator of supply chain, and a solution provider relating to raw materials for iron and steel making, and coal. It coordinates the entire aluminum and copper supply chain including: investing in smelters and mines; distributing aluminum and copper to manufacturers which use the products as raw material; and giving services such as Just-in-Time (JIT) delivery using prices established by future markets. The Division also has business relationships with non-ferrous materials/products consumers and manufacturers.
Business transactions include investments in steel scrap processing and export yard operations; supply of various steel raw materials for the steel and aerospace industry in the U.S.; export of coal to the Far East; and the coordination of non-ferrous materials/products demand and supply. The Division is also involved in the supply of aluminum and copper to consumers.
With investments made to assure supplies to customers, the Iron & Steel Raw Materials and Non-Ferrous Metals Division acts as a producer as well as a merchant. Its stable supply, due to its investment in up-stream operations (such as mines, and smelting/processing/stock yard operations) and by its provision of value added functions (such as Supply Chain Management or SCM, which utilizes MLX-F) in non-ferrous materials/products sales and procurement, gives Mitsui USA its competitive edge throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Korea, Malaysia, China and Japan.
The Division's operations encompass a substantial portion of the metals market providing more than 30% of hot briquetted iron (HBI), or 500,000 tons, into the U.S.; 40% of the U.S. market share in chromium super alloys; 10% of export volume, handled by affiliate Pacific Coast Recycling LLC, of steel scrap with approximately 60,000MT of copper cathode and 160,000MT of aluminum; more than 7 million pieces of door lock parts for passenger vehicles; and 8,000 tons of aluminum plate sales for Japanese transplant of automotive heat exchange components.
Given the scope of the Division's projects, it is supported by strategic relationships with Pacific Coast Recycling LLC, the third largest U.S. West coast exporter of steel scrap in regards to sales volume in 2003; Comsigua, a producer of HBI in Venezuela; Mitalco with aluminum smelting; and The International Metals & Minerals, with copper trading.
