Foods & Retail

This is the Mitsui USA Division which deals in grain (wheat, barley, corn, soy), coffee, meats, vegetables, eggs, juices, dairy products, frozen foods, fish products, feedstuff, edible oils, vegetable oil products, and canned foods through its New York departments of Foodstuff, Grain, and Produce, and its Portland Grain and Los Angeles Foods departments.

To be competitive, the Division has good business relationships with grain/foods suppliers, manufacturers, food processors, food distributors, food service companies and retail companies. It invests in the key food supply chain, manufacturing companies, export facilities, and distribution companies, independently or through its affiliated companies.

The Division procures food raw materials and products from the U.S., Brazil, Canada, other North and South American countries, and China, among others, and markets them all over the world including to Japan, the U.S., Taiwan, China and other Asian countries.

Notably, the Division is known for its consistent execution of safe, efficient distribution through its traceable Identity Preserved handling and checking systems, electronic or otherwise, that ensure quality control of foods and food materials.

The Division participates daily in the sales and marketing of grain/foods domestically and internationally. Additionally, it is always looking for opportunities of investment that add value in the food supply chain. Examples of its investments include: Ventura Foods (manufacturer of margarine, shortening, dressings, etc.); United Harvest (export facility for wheat/barley); and Mitsui Foods (a canned food distributor).

The Division is supported by many strategic relationships, such as world class grain/foods suppliers, grain/foods processors, distributors, food service operators and retailers.

To illustrate the scope of Foods & Retail, it handles about 20% of the total grain and coffee imports into Japan. It is one of the largest exporters of meat and grapefruits to Japan. Its affiliate, Ventura Foods, has a major market share in the U.S. for margarine, salad dressings, mayonnaise, and soup base for food service.

Having an extensive international network of suppliers, distributors, users, and retailers of grain/foods, the Division is able to address its customers' needs with various solutions.
